Plastic Molding Job Responsibilities

 

  • Provides engineering support and supervises all aspects of a shift related to production, quality, process maintenance, process improvement and maintenance.
  • Performs trouble shooting of molding processes and secondary operations (robotics, automation, trimming, packaging, palletizing) and equipment.
  • Assists supervisors, and technicians in repairing and updating production equipment and making recommendations for improvement of processes.
  • Utilizes sound processing and molding knowledge in setting and maintaining process operating parameters of molds, robots and related support equipment. Assures adherence to manufacturing requirements.
  • Directs supervisors and molding technicians in setting and maintaining optimum molding parameters to achieve production volume goals at the highest quality level with the lowest cost.
  • Directly supervise production personnel in a shift and manage the shift, following standardized work schedules - leading tier meetings, tracking hourly production data, correcting and maintaining production based on data, loading mold data, maintaining robots, programming robots, etc.
  • Possesses ability to program or trouble shoot robots (different makes), maintain mold data, check and repair automation equipment, etc.
  • Should be well versed in practical engineering disciplines of pneumatics, hydraulics and electrical engineering. These principles will be used on a daily basis for processing and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinates with other engineers and manufacturing process technologies (R&D) to improve existing parts and generate support data to recommend changes.
  • Evaluates new materials, runs DOEs on sample materials, tracks and records data related to samples, etc.
  • Works in fast paced operational environment with constant interaction with operators, technicians and equipment.
  • Assists in training and evaluating departmental personnel.
  • Plans, designs, coordinates and manages to completion capital and continuous improvement projects to meet quality, productivity and cost objectives consistent with departmental goals.
  • Typical projects would include process automation, resin cost reductions, virgin to scrap ratio modulations, replacement tooling, etc.
  • Maintain, train and handle daily activities related to 5S, CI activities, etc.
  • Maintain cell risk assessments, ensure safety adherence, champion safety improvement activities, etc.
  • Tracks, charts and makes corrections based on data related to productivity, quality, safety, cost, etc.
  • Assists in mold changes, setting up of mold fixtures, moving equipment, etc.
  • Utilizes sound knowledge of PVC, resins and molding to improve processing features and to make the operations more efficient.
  • Involved in ISO related activities, safety audits, HOS activities, Kaizen events, etc.
  • Hands on experience in the tooling part of plastic injection molding, taking apart and adjusting molds on a daily basis is required.
  • Working knowledge of design/development of manufacturing systems with emphasis on new molds and molding processes.
  • Create or understand mold flow analysis and be able to provide technical manufacturing support to other functional areas as needed.
  • Utilize project management skills to successfully plan, manage, and implement installations or modifications of new equipment and/or machinery to support the injection molding processes. Will be coordinating projects from inception through start-up and hand over to production and/or maintenance.

 

Plastic Molding Job Requirements

 

  • Engineering degree a plus, but four year degree required.
  • Qualified candidates will have 3 – 5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Leadership Style: Self-starter must be able to work with little direction and with high level of self-motivation. Must be able to work on own initiative and work well in a group.
  • Strong knowledge of plastic injection molding part design and tooling.
  • Well-organized project management skills, program management background a plus.
  • Proficiency in and the ability to model and implement the following concepts: empowerment and teamwork; TPS leadership philosophy and human resources practices; kaizen; standardized work; PDCA and problem solving; 5S; quality improvement tools; JIT production tools including: Value Stream Mapping, lead-time reduction, set-up time reduction, process flow improvement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills a must.
  • Advanced PC skills with standard MS Office software.
  • Experience with 3D CAD is preferred.
